Oh, man, I am late with this submission, but six dinner napkins are on their way to Io. The pieces became a mini-series titled Dinner Napkin Dowry. Images of larger works were transposed to the center of vintage linens; text originated from traditional Spanish proverbs. It was a wild ride working through this process.

Bacon Butty Napkin (digital print on cotton, 16” by 16”, edition of four)

Really enjoyed participating with this brief. Napkins:- what an interesting medium to exhibit! Bacon Butty Napkin is a playfully informative napkin celebrating the British love for bacon sandwiches and Heinz tomato ketchup. Underlying the aesthetic of this napkin’s content are the concerns and issues regarding the ethics of meat production and social naivety as to the origins of our food stuffs. This is by no means a piece of vegetarianism, but rather an observation that whilst we should enjoy our food, we should also think respectfully and responsibly about our food sources.

My 'Kain' dinner napkin series

"Kain" means food in Filipino, my native language. We often say "kain!" to invite a visitor, or anybody really, to join us in eating.

My contribution to Lisa and Io's project is a set of four dinner napkins. Using native woven cotton cloth from Abra, Philippines, each napkin bears a photo of a famous Philippine street food and the word "Kain!".

The napkins have been shipped, and hopefully already in Io's PO box. Can't wait to see the entire exhibition. ;)

I've enjoyed seeing what others are posting, and thus thought I'd share what I've made for the show too. My napkins are fictional records of the the social/emotional/psychological aspects of food and meals.

This one is the relationship tension dinner napkin, addressing meals and food as both context and metaphor for interpersonal relationships.

Then, there's this more psychological exploration of someone's relationship to food: the napkin that keeps all of the parts of the meal separate, because everything will be okay only if nothing touches.

All of the ingredients are in separate, sealed packets, and the text says things like "if nothing is touching, it will all be okay, I will be okay..." It's fiction, yes! I'm not really like this. I promise.

This one ended up being a bit bigger than it should've been -- sorry Lisa and Io! -- if you need to fold it when you hang it up to make it fit the 10" limit for the exhibition, go ahead.

Anyway... really fun to work on. Thanks for creating a project that allowed us to explore materials and contexts for our work that we may not have otherwise... and for providing this means of seeing what others are creating too!

Napkin is in the mail! I was thinking about being a kid in the 70’s… my parents were divorced and we used to have dinner with my Dad every Wednesday night. We’d usually head to McDonald’s, which at the time, seemed like a special treat. So, for my submission I wanted to use a disposable paper napkin, preferably with some sort of fast food logo on it. I went to the usual suspects to collect materials: McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC. None of the places I visited had napkins readily available. I approached the counter and made up an excuse about spilling something and just needing a few for cleaning up. The folks at the counter doled the napkins out sparingly. They no longer had embossed logos or anything signifying their restaurant of origin. I was somehow surprised to discover these odd facts, but figured it all boils down to economics… at least they were saving paper? And then I started thinking more about economics, fast food and obesity and feeling a little sick to my stomach. I reflected on the last time I had been at McDonald's. It was with my kids... they call it Barf Donalds. Maybe there is hope?

Serve and Project ( S&P), an interdisciplinary collaborative public arts project seeks dinner napkins from creative thinkers around the world.   

Artists from around the world are invited to submit a napkin or series of napkins that creatively documents a meal. While food references sustenance it also represents social and political issues. We are seeking people to submit cloth or paper napkins that in some way represent your connection to food and culture. Napkins can be drawn on, embroidered on, folder, torn or otherwise made. 

Sizes: Napkins can be any traditional or non-traditional shape as long as it fits within a 10” x 10” (25.4cm x 25.4cm) area and fit within a standard paper envelope for shipping. Pieces must be able to hang on the wall with a small pin.  

Free: We provide envelopes for return mailing.

Digging the Change

I have never been so dirty on the New Year.

In honor of the birth of 2011, one of my closest friends and I embarked on a major project - redesigning my existing garden. The goal is to use my space more effectively so that I can grow more food, use less water, and preserve soil. My target for the year is grow at least 50% of my family's vegetables.

To be honest, however its not just about us. In our time of food insecurity and increased financial hardship, I hope to encourage others to champion creativity, community effort, and self reliance. This little plot of earth can be a place for creativity and collaboration. In CyberFeast, we've seen how food can bring people together with a creative end. Can you imagine the change and creative power that can come from a living, evolving, and sustaining environment?

I'm digging that change.

Thank you for this invite. I am excited about Cyber Feast and sent off my napkin Friday. The Omnivore's Dilema is so inspiring. Gave me hope. Currently I am using illegal seed..Oh MY!!!!! Makes me feel daring. Our garden supplies us with so much that we need not question. My daughter has horses, do I need to say more, and I still recall how to hand pick potato bugs as I did in childhood.
I am returning to my quilling now. Getting ready for a wearable show next year. Building a dress.

Wishing everyone a great start to 2011! We started with pure sugar & lots of fries! As far as food goes, broke any kind of healthy New Year's resolution so it made it more fun to re-do the resolution today. Just recently I was invited by the Sophia Institute in Charelston, SC to participate in an exhibition of women artists. I was excited by the opportunity because I really wanted to do an interactive exhibition piece that explores our emotional connection to food. Dear Chocolate, Thank you is a collaborative work that documents and discusses our individual and collective connection to this sweet treat.

Exhibition goers were invited to take a chocolate bar throughout the run of the exhibition. In exchange takers were asked to write thank you letters to chocolate. The letters were written on labels I designed, and then left behind. There are some incredible responses!

The Last Piece of Cake in the Office Kitchen

The Best Hamantaschen in the World

Hello All,

I wanted to share with you the first part of my submission for CyberFeast II. I consider this the first part of a two part project, which uses a rationale grounded in absurdity to explore the internet's present day role as cooking aide/recipe database.

Using the Hamantaschen as a starting point, I queried google to find "the best hamantaschen in the world". The posted napkin image documents my amateurish, dry and formulaic rationale utilized to validate the best and second best recipes.

Part II will conclude in my attempts at cooking, tasting, and rating the second best hamantaschen in the world.

The piece uses both the sterility of the instructions coupled with playful food "animation" to create a comical and thorough review of this food item."

Hamentaschen!

I had a lovely time creating/sculpting/baking Hamentaschen. I don't usually cook or bake - particularly not in the summer - so although it was only a small dessert, this was quite an experiment for me. The shopping alone felt like a ritual! Then late saturday night - technically sunday - I started gathering and mixing and rolling and cooking. (Not entirely unlike a late night studio session!)

As I mixed and stirred, I honestly wasn't sure it would work out. I didn't know when the dough was ready, versus just ingredients. It was almost like that moment where you wonder - is it art? I scorned sifting, whisking, and power mixing! This was the labor of my hands alone! (Well, ok, I don't have any of that equipment...) And soon enough my fiance fell asleep so I was on photo and baking duty.

The first batch came out tasty, but a bit bulky. I rolled thinner dough and used more jam (usually this would be poppy seed filling but I wanted to improvise with the jams I rarely use). It was fun to shape the triangles, like little hats. Once baked, I feasted first, then in true asynchonous/digital fashion, arranged future feasts for 1. my fiance 2. our friend who ran a marathon and was STARVING afterward 3. a friend in New Jersey.

Jonell Pulliam's last post- describing chance and inclusive creativity, made me think about the happenings of 1960’s and Suzanne Lacy. As luck would have it, I found this post on U Tube which documents parts of a conversation between Suzanne Lacy and her mentor Judy Chicago. Both women are known for merging creative acts with social relevance.

Four Simple Ingredients: A Happening for CyberFeast II

I was really excited to participate in CyberFeast II. Four Simple Ingredients: A Happening was inspired by Appetizer - The Wine Tasting that Became my Banquet; an event from CyberFeast I. As an avid bread maker and visual artist, I was particularly interested in the idea of Amish Friendship bread – a key element in that event. I liked the idea of simple elements coming together to create a delicious outcome. I also appreciated the notion of chance that was an element of that event. Chance is a part of my art making process.

Four Simple Ingredients was based on process of making friendship bread: simple materials, basic instruction, sharing creative energy, and collaboration. Our charge for the evening was to create a work of art that was somehow inspired by the food, conversations, and diverse artistic perspectives assembled at the Happening. Participants were invited to set up shop anywhere in the house, work individually or collaboratively, and use any materials available.

Ten people - artists, young designers, educators, and parents - attended the Four Simple Ingredients. The event began with a pot-luck dinner, that was collaboratively prepared or served. The menu included:

After dinner, the group organically divided up into the various spaces of the house and began creating art. The resulting work included ink and paper assemblage by artist Lynne Riding; a Bomb Pop painting by Andre Barbosa; a found-fabric skirt by Anika and Egyptt; an ink and graphite drawing by artist Kimberly McHenry-Williams; photo embroidery by Donna Hurt; a food painting by creative Germaine Jenkins; and an embroidered paper collaborative project by Amy Reed. I am currently working on the next phase of the project - napkins - inspired by the experience of the evening.

Everyones Favorite Table Setting

Judy Chicago's Dinner Party was produced between 1974 and 1979 is an elaborate project that pays homage to actual and mythical women in history. At the table are 39 table settings that include a range of crafts, plates, runners, and eating utensils. In Judy's words, this project started as a simple homage to "twenty-five women who were eaten alive".

Rirkrit Tiravanija, a contemporary artist born in Buenos Aires, Argentina , is known for the lavish meals he prepares in gallery spaces and served to viewers. Through cooking and serving, Tiravanija's work explores the role of artists in society. The artwork then becomes the making, production and serving of food. While the end result may be a photograph or a memory.
Relational artists such as Rirkrit explore a range of social relationships by producing art that questions and blurs boundaries that exist within art production.

Call for artist participants in a multi-disciplinary art project that engages community in dialogue about the making, production and consumption of food, through workshops, gallery exhibitions, and new for 2010, a series of "cyber feasts".

For Cyberfeast II artists Io Palmer and Lisa Link invite people to participate through our Blog and Skype . Artwork on the blog will be presented as part of the project " Here, There and Everywhere: The Art of Collaboration –" during the TransCultural Exchange’s 2011 Conference on International Opportunities in the Arts in Boston, 2011.

So many people were out of town the night of our first Cyber Feast.
Two dear friends and colleagues came over to my apartment to celebrate and support Serve and Project.
The three of us, we traveled first to Chicago for Patrick's soup feast.
Then we went to Boston where Lisa was hosting a dinner ala Hamentashen cookies.
After we surfed to Minneapolis where Priscilla was hosting a grand and colorful potluck !

Back at my place, my friends and I feasted on:

The Wine Tasting That Became My Banquet

I love when things come together. They are little coincidences. In my head I see them as atoms and when they collide, they become molecules...or maybe, just something bigger. They aren't really big things. Nothing like discovering penicillin, but more like when your first angel food cake finally turns out right or the first time you make a loaf of bread that is nothing short of wow. The relationship just seems to fit together like a recipe or a puzzle.

When I received the invitation for the cyber banquet I also received an invitation by an acquaintance for food and wine at the appointed time. It was really a wine tasting with food, but we didn't want to decline. So, it became the banquet. At the same time, I also received a starter for Amish Friendship Bread. Since it appeared that the food end of things was completely covered, I didn't make the bread for the banquet. But I did do a lot of searching on the internet about it and somehow I feel that that story makes sense in this context.

I had never heard of Amish Friendship Bread, so when I got a starter from a friend I looked at the recipe and declared "there's enough leavening in here to make this, so what does the starter do?" And off I went to the internet to learn about the history of this bread.

Amish Friendship Bread is not Amish, nor is it what I would consider real bread. The starter is yeast based and is fed with enough milk, sugar and flour, so that every 10 days, the owner shares it with 3 friends. One person commented that it was a chain letter of sorts. Another person said that they made the bread recipe with and without the starter and the breads tasted the same. So, ultimately, it all seems to be about sharing with friends. And this blog and project is about sharing and friends.

Hi All! Thanks so much for participating in our first Cyberbanquet Experiment! We will be writing more soon. I wanted to share with you photos from Boston. Also here is a link to the story of Purim which I think my guests & I didn't tell very well to someone who asked and we probably made it out to be something it's not. The main heroine is Esther, a woman in the harem of a Persian king and the conflict with the king's evil advisor Haman who doesn't like her or her cousin. We celebrate her daring to speak up to her king in a time when women could be killed for doing so. The evil person is kind of a Dick Cheney character, power hungry second-in-command.

Hi Everyone,

Within a few days of the invitation to the cyber banquet, I received an invitation to a friend's for wine and food to take place at the specified day and time. There's a great collection of people here. But unfortunately, there is no high speed internet and no Skype to be accessed. Our host said that his internet connection was via barbed wire.

But I wanted to let everyone know that I am thinking of them and hoping that their food and the stories are as wonderful as mine.

There will be plenty of images and more to share post banquet.

Sometime in the early 80's the classic " Indian Cooking" by Madhur Jaffrey came my way. Since we were students, aloo gobi, potatoes and cauliflower with cumin and other spices was an inexpensive yet hearty dish that we could make.

It's been many years and my cookbook collection has grown considerably. Recipes don't get lost, but rather buried in the accumulating stack of books and magazines. But surprisingly, aloo gobi wells up from time to time.

Winter in Chicago

I've been becoming more locavore-conscious, but I still love things like red quinoa, avocados, and oranges. Some of the local/Midwest food I've been enjoying during this long Chicago winter: (heirloom) acorn squash (roasted with olive oil is amazing), potatos, and apples from Michigan. I've been getting most of my local stuff, which is so beautiful, not in a fake pristine way, but in a natural, scarred way, at The Dill Pickle Co-Op, which recently opened. Chicago really needed a food co-op!
Potatos and apples - the two pommes in French. The How To Bake A Potato website gave me a great tip: coating the potato with oil before baking, which gives it a wonderful, delicious skin. Or I grate a potato right into a cast iron skillet for some fast hash browns, or make potato soup with kale (which I'll be making for the cyber banquet). Why do kale and potatos go so well together? These potato/kale enchiladas are one of the most amazing things I've ever made. I've been cutting an apple in half every morning, using the AM half for my winter breakfast of oatmeal, and then using the PM half to put in my soygurt with raw agave nectar. Yum.
Even though I've been enjoying winter and winter food, I'm looking forward to the first local-food-signs of Spring - garlic scapes and ramps. My sister once stir fried garlic scapes with olive oil and white wine, served them over pasta, and I was forever changed.

Who Wants Grocery Stores When There Are Parties?

When was the last time you heard a supermarket described as "a giant party"? If you're from the Boston area like me, probably never. Unless you hear references to the Donner Party getting it right because cannibalism is more attractive than shopping in tiny aisles full of aggressive cart-pushers.

I'm in the West for the winter, though, where the rules for grocery stores are different. When I heard Pros Ranch Market in Phoenix described as a kind of festival full of cheap Mexican food, I made a b-line.

Yes indeed, it's just like a kid's birthday party with a noisy Mexican soundtrack and multi-colored streamers on the ceiling fans. The difference is the grownups go home the prizes: tamales and fresh masa and a tongue-sizzling array of chili peppers. Half the store is given to Mexican-accented groceries, with separate departments for bakery items, fruity drinks, fish and a killer meat counter, and the other half is a food court.

When I say food court, I don't mean Sbarro and Quiznos. I mean these guys are making their own food and selling it fast and cheap. A massive grill is lined with split chickens. A volcano-sized molcajete brims with fresh guacamole. Back by the fish department, tanks are swimming with live fish – you can bet those tilapia are leaping straight from the water into your cabbage-lined fish taco. And you, humble shopper, can have these delights in exchange for a few dollars. A quintet of soft tortillas filled with freshly made carne asada or chicken or carnitas and smothered with sauces is about $4.

And the tortillas! They make both corn and flour tortillas fresh, beginning with whole ears of corn. That's right, they roll in massive bins of corn on the cob, shuck it, boil it, work their masa magic, and out from a big conveyor belt come hot tortillas, straight into bags and left to gently cool on the shelf. I haven't felt anything so warm and comforting since the moment before I was born.

While most American supermarkets give more floor space to ads and counter space to vegetables that look and taste just like wax, Ranch Market is a treat. After all, who wants to do weekly grocery shopping when they can go to a fiesta instead?

Cyberfeast -- Chinese New Year's Williston North Dakota

Chinese New Year (the Year of the Tiger began on 2/14) is the most important cultural Chinese celebration, lasting up to 15 days. On February 27th (still within the official 15-day celebration period!), we will be having a tiny family celebration in Williston, North Dakota (well, as "tiny" as it can be with four children, two adults, and hopefully some guests). The Chinese population in Williston is truly tiny but the Chinese celebratory spirit is (and will be on February 27th) HUGE!
